Thank you for joining our launch event for The Promise of Public Education series!
What is the role of public schools in building a stronger, more resilient and democratic Canada? This is the core question at the centre of The Promise of Public Education 8-event series we launched on January 20, 2026 in Toronto, together with more than 150 passionate attendees, hosted by George Brown Polytechnic.
Highlights included:
Insights on the origins of public education in Canada from PFE founding Executive Director, Annie Kidder, where she talked about a system designed to help protect against becoming the “dupes of demagogues.”
A data presentation from ‘s Executive Director, Andrew Parkin about how Canada does in education relative to the rest of the world.
A panel of experts from a range of industries and backgrounds grappled with the role of schools in:
✅ Preparing citizens for an active democracy
✅ Delivering workers to fuel our most critical industries
✅ Sparking curiosity
✅ Responding and adapting to AI
The panel was offered a magic policy wand to make one change, they came up with ideas big and small like:
- Every adult spends one day in a school to better understand the pressures the system is facing and what educators are balancing;
- Address grade inflation;
- Transparent data and conversations about what’s working and not;
- A national dialogue on the value of public education.
We’re not magic, but we are granting that last policy wish because this series *is* the start of a national dialogue on the value of public education. From the role of schools in social and economic mobility to religious accommodation and institutional trust, and many issues in between, join us for the rest of The Promise of Public Education event series, coming to a city near you!
